【Career】Hult Prize at NSYSU - Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Proposal Competition-“Redesigning Fashion” Hult Prize at NSYSU OnCampus Program Briefing Session

The College of Management at the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) aspires to be the model of business management education in Asia. The school is committed to the education of ethics, social responsibility, sustainability, and cultivating relevant talents. Since 2018, NSYSU has published its annual report on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for four consecutive years. The Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility (ORSA) was also established to support NSYSU’s vision. To raise the school’s effort in social responsibility, the Office of Career Development under the College, assisted the students and the Hult Prize Club to organize an OnCampus Program briefing session to introduce this year’s Hult Prize competition.

The theme of this year’s Hult Prize competition is “Redesigning Fashion”. It challenges the students to launch an innovative social venture in the clothing and fashion industry to make it more sustainable. You can read more about the competition through this link.

The briefing was held on the 27th of September 2022. The first part of the briefing was hosted by the campus director, I-Ting Wu, from the Department of Finance. I-Ting elaborated on this year’s theme, process, and the rules of the competition. We also invited one of the team members of the second runner-up in last year’s Hult Prize campus competition, Kylie Nguyen from IBMBA, to share her experience and address questions raised by the audience. Under the theme of "Getting The World Back To Work", Kylie’s team, PeeCa Chew, proposed a project on selling dried tangerine, which aimed at reducing food waste and helping the disabled group to find employment. The project greatly impressed last year’s judge, Tai Jiaming, CEO of Xinyong Design Lab, who mentioned that if PeeCa Chew has the intention to realize the project, he would be happy to assist them with it. During her sharing, she also shared some of the hurdles they faced during the competition and tips on how to overcome those difficulties. For instance, the team members of PeeCa Chew were made up of international students. Because of this, they did not have any knowledge of Taiwan’s commercial law. Kylie suggested that contestants could consider consulting their professors or mentors regarding this matter.

Towards the end of the sharing was the Q&A segment. There were multiple questions raised such as "What was the process like during the brainstorming stage?", "How did you strike a balance between profitability and sustainability?", "How did you manage your time during the competition?" and more. Specifically for the first question, Kylie shared that her team members had many ideas. After brainstorming, they had to evaluate the pros and cons of each idea before deciding on the final project. Adding on, Kylie shared that when working in a group, it is important to communicate with each other and have an open mind to others’ suggestions. When bringing your points across, instead of forcefully asking your team members to agree with you, you should instead try to convince them by providing evidence, such as data or prior experiences, which would make your suggestions more convincing.
