Management College Presents: Conversations on What Truly Matters - English Corner

The College of Management English Learning Corner held its second exchange event of the semester on November 29th: "Conversations on What Truly Matters." The discussion was led by Haley He, a graduate of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at Sun Yat-sen University and a former instructor at the English Learning Corner. This event aimed to encourage students to engage in English discussions on key life topics such as aspirations, happiness and success, as well as love and wealth.

The event began with self-introductions, followed by the first discussion: What are the three most important aspirations in your life? For example, some students shared goals like achieving financial independence before turning 30 or traveling to ten countries. One student, who had recently been in a car accident, expressed a desire for a full recovery, buying his dream car, and achieving financial independence by 25. Others shared simpler wishes, such as enjoying every day with happiness, staying hungry for knowledge, and finding the love of his life.

The second question posed was: Would you prefer a stable job or a challenging and demanding one? Some students said they would choose a stable job to save money and pursue their interests in their free time. Others mentioned shifting from military school to theater arts in pursuit of a job they’re passionate about. A finance student expressed a preference for entrepreneurship over joining a large company, believing they couldn’t endure a monotonous lifestyle and would find challenging work more appealing.

Through this activity, students explored their core values and envisioned their futures while practicing listening and expressing their opinions in English. Along the way, they learned useful vocabulary like aspiration, prioritize, and essential. These reflections and discussions will help them engage more deeply with international friends and better understand how people from different cultures view life.
