“WORKING IN VIETNAM - A PROMISING JOURNEY"
In some recent years, Taiwan is seeing a rising number of young people seeking employment in Southeast Asia where they may be able to start new jobs with decent salary, lower living costs, and better chances of a quick promotion. In particular, a number of Taiwanese companies shift production to Vietnam (or India), with examples like Eclat Textile, Pou Chen (寶成工業) and Feng Tay (豐泰企業), Fu Sheng Industrial Co (復盛應用) or the tech company Advantech, adding to the sheer number of Taiwanese companies investing in Vietnam.
The first eight months of 2021 witnessed Taiwan to become the sixth largest investors in Vietnam out of 106 countries and territories with a combined registered capital of US$1.25 billion, or 6.39% of the total. In early 2021, it is reported Taiwan-based Pegatron Corporation had plans to set up production facilities in the north of Vietnam, becoming Apple’s latest assembly partner to establish a presence in the country in a bid to diversify its manufacture beyond China. Pegatron would join Apple’s two other iPhone assemblers in developing manufacturing facilities or building extra capacity in Vietnam. Other electronics manufacturers such as Foxconn, Compal, Wistron, Getac have also set up production sites in Vietnam.
Together with recently booming economic growth, Vietnam has become an attractive destination for young Taiwanese nationals. According to MOFA, there are an estimated 70,000 Taiwanese businesspeople and expats living in Vietnam.
