[OAD News] Beyond the Classroom: Three Award-Winning Professors Share Their Commitment to Student-Centered Teaching

What makes a course truly memorable—one that leaves a lasting impression on students? On March 27, 2025, the Office of Academic Affairs at the College of Management, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), hosted a distinctive event titled “Teaching Philosophy and Practice Sharing Session.” The session featured three exceptional educators: Associate Professor Chih-Yuan Wang from the Department of Business Management, Assistant Professor Yu-Hsuan Wang from the Institute of Human Resource Management, and Associate Professor Chia-Fen Tsai from the Department of Finance. All three are recipients of NSYSU’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Through their personal stories and experiences, they offered inspiration and practical insights to fellow educators and doctoral students, shedding light on how care, creativity, and sincerity fuel effective teaching.
The session began with Associate Professor Chih-Yuan Wang, who immediately energized the room with his signature interactive approach. Using Slido for live polling and audience engagement, he created a dynamic and inviting atmosphere. Professor Wang reflected on the responsibilities and challenges faced by university instructors, emphasizing that thoughtful, innovative, and interactive course design can significantly enhance student motivation. He encouraged teachers to embrace the diversity of learners in their classrooms, and to be mindful of varying learning styles and paces. He closed with a gentle reminder: “Teachers aren’t superheroes—just do your best.”
Next, Assistant Professor Yu-Hsuan Wang shared her journey of balancing the dual demands of teaching and research in a research-focused academic environment. She noted the emotional energy required to support students while preparing lessons and pursuing rigorous academic work. To manage these demands, she recommended using “vertical and horizontal integration” in course design to streamline resources and content. She also highlighted how student accomplishments can create a virtuous cycle between teaching and research—enhancing both outcomes while saving time. Her takeaway message: “Staying adaptable and committed to growth is the key to thriving under pressure.”
Closing the session was Associate Professor Chia-Fen Tsai, whose heartfelt talk centered around trust as the foundation of her teaching philosophy. Known by students as “Mama Tsai,” she spoke about fostering a classroom culture grounded in sincerity, care, and mutual respect. Through engaging activities such as videos, competitions, and talks from alumni and industry experts, she brings relevance and excitement to her lessons. She also places strong emphasis on student well-being, using anonymous feedback mechanisms to better understand their needs and adjust her teaching accordingly—demonstrating her genuine investment in every student’s growth.
This meaningful gathering brought together educators from across disciplines who share a deep commitment to shaping not just students’ knowledge, but also their confidence, well-being, and sense of belonging—truly taking learning beyond the classroom.
