《113-2 SA event 》Thesis info session with IBMBA alumni
In our recent thesis sharing session on 2th May 2025 The Student Association holds a Thesis sharing session to guide current students in the program with their master thesis writing, by sharing valuable insights and advice from our IBMBA alumni.
Andy Nguyen, who is an international IBMBA alumni that is pursuing doctorate degree, started out by introduing the topic of your thesis, he emphasizes that we all need to find the right idea, he encourages to look around ourselves and see what we notice, and further advised that feasibility is the most important factor. And how we should consider our personal connections and budget.
He goes on to explain about the hypothesis and how should we develop it, including choosing words carefully and how broad/narrow your range should be. Then he goes on to explain about choosing an advisor and how it is crucial to your work progress and master thesis, He recommends each of the students to find a professor within their speciality, and furthermore that we need to look at each professor’s work style and see if it matches well woth our personality and lifestyle as well.
Then he moves on to the model and how we shouldn’t overdo it, complex and sophisticated research model will only increase your workload later and requires a complex analytical techniques and he advises us to choose, create and structure your research model within the master thesis level, to focus on your goal and have back up plans incase research model doesn’t work out as we expected.
He further explains to us about types of framework and how we should structure them, explaining theories that are used and relationship between them.
Next Andy touched on methodology and different types of data collection and how compensation is a big part in data collection. Sourcing our data and theories top journals, using AIs to double check and develop your own by basing them from trustable top journals. Andy turns to data analytical and how each research method like quantitative and qualitative should be like, recommended programs and helpful software to help our data analytical goes smoothly. Andy talks about turnitin according to our department’s requirements when submitting our thesis and how we could maneuver, avoid some problems when faced with some obstacles.
Since our department and graduation requirement involve master thesis defending, Andy explains briefly about committee hearing and its structure and how to choose your committee members, Andy advises us to be careful when choosing members from outside our program and that we can better choose our members when the time comes.
In conclusion Andy emphasizes about starting your thesis early since he mentioned that it could take longer than we expected and that if we start earlier then we would be able to avoid or have time to solve problems, obstacles that will inevitably come up in our thesis writing process.
