[ACT] Students Visit ASE Group Kaohsiung Headquarters, Strengthening Industry–Academia Collaboration

On December 2, 2025, students from the ACT Program at the College of Management, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), visited the Kaohsiung headquarters of ASE Group as part of The Asian Business Context course. The visit was made possible through the support and coordination of NSYSU alumnus Mr. Michael Lee, Vice President of ASE Group, reflecting the strong alumni network of NSYSU and its close ties with industry partners.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, Inc. (ASE) is a global leader in semiconductor packaging and testing, playing a critical role in the development of advanced electronics, system integration, and artificial intelligence–driven technologies. Through sustained investment in research and development, capital expenditure, talent cultivation, and sustainability initiatives, ASE has established itself as a key contributor to global technological innovation.

The company visit aimed to provide students with first-hand exposure to Asian business environments, deepen their understanding of real-world corporate operations, and bridge academic learning with industry practice. Upon arrival, students were welcomed by ASE representatives and introduced to the company’s operational processes, core technologies, and global service portfolio. The visit quickly developed into an interactive learning experience, with students actively participating in discussions and extensive question-and-answer sessions.

During the tour, students explored exhibitions showcasing ASE’s patent portfolio, examined semiconductor wafers and chips up close, and reviewed displays illustrating the evolution of electronic devices enabled by ASE technologies. A guided visit to the company’s history hall highlighted ASE’s growth from its founding to its current global presence.

A dedicated session on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives attracted particular interest. Students learned about ASE’s sustainability strategies, corporate responsibility practices, and long-term development vision, prompting thoughtful exchanges on the challenges and opportunities facing the semiconductor industry in a rapidly changing global environment.

The visit also included a tour of ASE’s Water Recycling Facility, where students observed advanced water-treatment and recycling systems in operation. This segment offered valuable insights into how water-intensive industries integrate environmental stewardship into daily operations, reinforcing the importance of sustainability in modern manufacturing.

Beyond student learning, the visit underscored the industry–academia collaboration between ASE Group and the College of Management at NSYSU. In recent years, faculty members from the College of Management collaborated with ASE Group on an industry project focused on the development of a Programming Code system, applying academic expertise to support practical industry needs. This collaboration exemplifies NSYSU’s strategic emphasis on knowledge transfer, applied research, and talent development through close engagement with industry partners.

For many students, the experience effectively connected classroom concepts with real-world practice. As one participant shared, “The visit helped me better understand how what we learn in class is applied in real corporate operations and how important communication and technical skills are in the workplace.”

Overall, the visit to ASE Group enhanced students’ understanding of the semiconductor industry, highlighted the role of sustainability and innovation in corporate strategy, and demonstrated the value of alumni engagement and industry collaboration in advancing experiential learning at NSYSU.
